The name of the island comes from an old Latin phrase ‘insula maior’ that means 'larger island’. Over time, the phrase was mispronounced and the island became known as Mallorca.
Here are some of the reasons why we think you will love Mallorca too:
Mallorca enjoys nearly 300 days of sunshine each year, so it’s hardly surprising that beach life is favourite for locals and visitors alike. Luckily for sun-worshippers, the island offers an amazing selection of playas (beaches) and calas (coves), that caters for all tastes. With its 262 beaches, you can always escape the crowds and find your piece of paradise.
If you like sports and ‘the great outdoors’, then you will love what Mallorca offers year-round. Hiking the in the Tramontana, caving, & canyoning are wonderful winter pursuits, while the summer there are an abundance of ways to enjoy the water whether you prefer to be on, in or under it!
You want something more adventurous than swimming in crystal clear waters? Then try fly boarding or sea caving!
Mallorca is the centre of yachting in the Mediterranean, and whether your preference of propulsion is motor or sail, there are numerous picturesque anchorages and marinas island-wide, to choose from.
For the Superyacht owner or enthusiast, recent luxury marina developments such as Port Adriano (that has berths for yachts up to 80m), are a favourite especially in the summer as one can enjoy restaurants, concerts and events in sybaritic surroundings.
Whether you are an amateur or a professional cyclist, you will want to experience the spectacular cycling routes of Mallorca. Dramatic mountain views, idyllic countryside, and small stone villages make the effort worthwhile!
Fore! The first golf course opened in 1964, and now there are 20 golf courses including Son Muntaner with its 517m par 5 uphill hole. Stunning surroundings and challenging links await you.
Mallorca is a gastronomic paradise! If you’re looking for fine dining experiences, there are 7 Michelin-starred restaurants on the island to tantalise your tastebuds.
However, we like to keep things simple, and with such incredible local ingredients, seafood, and the many Mallorcan wines means that wherever you are, you will never go hungry. Prepare your palette to be amazed!
The island’s capital Palma has one of the best preserved old towns in Europe, and is a lively mix of museums, art galleries, stunning architecture, cobbled streets, and an enviable cafe culture, so it’s no surprise that Palma was declared to be ‘the most liveable city in the world’ by Time Magazine in 2016.
